Paul was born June 6, 1925, to Alex and Minnie Panula in Bear River. He grew up helping on the family dairy farm, attending Togo School and Grand Rapids High School. He served in the Army Air Corps, trained as an auto mechanic, and was stationed on Adak Island in the Aleutians. After his military service, Paul worked at Lerch Brothers and Hanna Mining’s research lab.  In October 1955, Paul married “the girl next door,” Martha Brock, at Bear River Lutheran Church. They raised their children, Don and Evelyn, in Hibbing and were members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. He worked as a truck driver at the Hull Rust mine and millwright at National Steel in Keewatin.

Paul’s favorite pastimes started at an early age: listening to polka music and dancing, following the news, and visiting family and friends. After he retired, Paul and Martha traveled to Finland to visit his relatives.
